Social Emotional Learning

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

At Discovery we provide many supports for social emotional learning including curriculum, small group work, mentoring, and Primary Project.

Primary Project

National evidence-based K-3rd grade program led by Justin Nilsson.

Behavior Specialist, Elizabeth Hughes

The Behavioral Specialist is responsible for giving individualized assistance to students with behavioral difficulties. She is an integral part of creating behavior systems, protocols and practices in conjunction with all other staff. She develops a strong rapport with students and families in order to promote social and emotional well-being.

Social Worker, Rita Nilsson

The School Social Worker’s responsibilities include providing information to students, parents, and school staff. Addressing relevant issues in the school, such as school attendance, illegal drugs, mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group meetings. Serves as community liaison.

Student Services Coordinator, Kaleigh Jacobson

The Student Services Coordinator provides leadership and professional development to drive both academic and social/emotional intervention school-wide.  She also ensures compliance of, and improving upon, established policies, practices, procedures and/or regulations dealing with Response to Intervention (RtI), Special Education, Social Emotional Learning, and Crisis Intervention.
