Discovery Charter School Safety and Emergency Plan Highlights
The safety plan is submitted to state and local officials each year so that they are aware of our procedures and other important factors (layout of the building, contact information, emergency response, communication plan). The plan is updated each year before being approved by the school board and being submitted. Plans have been created with advice from Greece Police and in cooperation with Young Women’s College Prep and teachers are trained each year. The Number 1 priority for DCS is to keep your children safe.
Functional annexes focus on the critical operational functions and courses of action developed to carry them out.
- School Shelter in Place Plan
Shelter in Place Plan will be initiated when school is in session and a situation occurs for which the School Director determines that staying in the school building is safer than being outdoors. This also may include a medical situation that would require students to stay in classrooms until it is resolved.
- School Off-Site Sheltering Plan
The Off-Site Sheltering Plan will be activated as part of the Evacuation Plan when the School Director determines that the cause of an evacuation warrants off-site sheltering of students.
- Hold In Place (Shelter in Place)
This annex focuses on courses of action when students and staff are required to remain in place for an expected short duration incident, such as a fight, medical emergency, or maintenance issue.
- Evacuation (Fire)
The School Evacuation Plan will be initiated when school is in session and the School Director or appropriate administrator determines that the school building does not provide a safe environment for staff and students. The building needs to be evacuated quickly.
The School Director or appropriate administrator will determine whether to initiate the Lockout Plan to prevent any unauthorized visitors from entering the building. There is a potentially serious threat outside of the building.
The School Director or appropriate administrator will determine whether to initiate the Lockdown Plan in response to incidents of actual or potential threats of violence. There is a potentially serious, active threat inside or outside the building
- Family Reunification
*In the case of an emergency, messages and updates will be sent to families using the Remind App.

This is the area where media personnel will assemble during or after a school incident for briefings and press releases.
Parents Assembly Area: DCS Gymnasium

Transportation Area: Bus Loop
