English Language Arts (ELA)

Discovery believes in a developmental approach to teaching literacy. This approach requires teachers to use differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of our students. Discovery’s literacy program is designed to support kindergarten through six graders develop reading skills through evidence-based science of reading techniques. We prioritize providing students with a strong foundation in phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and communication. Students will work both independently and in small groups with our teachers, utilizing engaging and age-appropriate materials to practice applying their skills. Our program aims to build confident, proficient readers who will prepare for lifelong learning and success using the Next Generation ELA standards.

Our primary classrooms use the HMH Into Reading: Structured Literacy curriculum to teach students the skills needed to acquire strong and automatic knowledge of letters and sounds. Students receive approximately 120 minutes of literacy instruction. HMH Into Reading content-based literacy is taught through modules that align with science, social studies, and social and emotional content.  Access meaningful independent work and a wide variety of relevant, rich, authentic texts for independent reading to offer students appropriate ownership of their learning.
